Our Heritage

“Cumbria holds a particular kind of stillness; one shaped by weather, water and time.

Growing up and now returning and living here here, the landscape became something I learned from. Coniston, especially, has always been a constant. That connection to place is foundational to OUBAS as it’s not separate from our work, but it informs it.

We believe clothing can offer a kind of sanctuary. Something to return to. Something that holds its place in your life, not just in a season."

— Kate Stalker, Founder of OUBAS

OUBAS was established with a clear conviction: that clothing can be made and valued here, differently. Rooted in an instinct for material integrity and place, the studio exists to contribute meaningfully to a more considered fashion landscape.

Through OUBAS, we offer a more direct relationship between maker and wearer. Our core collections are produced made-to-order in limited batches, with full transparency around materials, processes and origin. This approach encourages a deeper connection to each piece; one grounded in understanding, longevity and care.

Alongside this, the studio supports skilled employment within our local area and sustains the specialist craft of knitwear production. By keeping design and manufacturing close to home, we are able to maintain both quality and continuity whilst ensuring that these skills remain active, relevant and valued.

We collaborate with designers and studios looking to produce knitwear in the UK, offering access to the technical, material and manufacturing knowledge required to take a product from concept through to production. This collaboration is grounded in clarity and shared understanding; connecting design ambition with the practicalities of making.

Over time, this has developed into a focused ecosystem around the studio: one that brings together textile design, yarn sourcing, programming and production within a single place. By keeping these processes closely aligned, we are able to support independent brands while maintaining the integrity and viability of local manufacturing.

In doing so, we contribute to the continuity of specialist skills, while creating a framework where contemporary design can be realised through responsible, place-based production.
